Equation Art

Did you know? All computer pictures and images are math equations!

Draw pictures with math

Every photo, game and video on your screen is made of tiny dots, and every dot’s color is a number worked out with math. Here you get to write that math yourself!

Every point on a graph has an x and a y. An equation is a rule that connects them, and the computer draws every point where the rule is true. Change just one number and the whole picture changes!

What does “true” mean?

It means the point fits the rule. Take y = x + 1: if x is 2, then y is 3. So the point (2, 3) makes the rule true, and the computer puts a dot there. It checks thousands of points, and all the dots join up into a line or a curve.

Then go one giant step further: give every single pixel its own Red, Green and Blue equation, and you can paint swirling galaxies and glowing sunsets with nothing but math!

Color mixer: how RGB numbers work

Every color on a screen is three numbers from 0 to 255: how bright the tiny red, green and blue lights are. Slide them, tap a color, and watch the numbers change.
